Video streaming service Stan has increased the price of its Standard and Premium subscription plans by $1, for a new monthly price of $17 and $22, respectively.
This follows a $2 bump to its Basic subscription back in March for new customers. While these amounts aren’t much in isolation, they come as part of industry-wide price hikes in 2024.
Here's a look at Stan's streaming subscriptions:
The price increase should hit existing customers on their next regular billing date. Stan is communicating the change to customers via email.
An expensive year for streaming
Stan isn't the only streaming provider asking more from its customers.
Binge's Standard subscription will be increasing from $18 to $19 on November 1. The company also introduced annual subscriptions earlier this month, which essentially get you four free months – though the value only exists if you were going to have a full year of subscription, anyway.
Netflix increased the price of every plan in September: $1 more for Ads, $2 more for Standard, and $3 more for Premium. In July, Amazon introduced ads to its Prime Video subscription, now requiring additional fees for an ad-free service.
Disney Plus shook things up a little back in January, introducing a new, more-expensive Premium tier and removing 4K streaming from its Standard subscription – a price rise by any other name, if 4K is a must-have for you. More recently, the media behemoth cracked down on password sharing and introduced an additional password sharing fee if you want to continue doing it.
This is far from a comprehensive list. But given how many video streaming services are on offer these days, it might shed some light on why ad-supported video subscriptions are increasing in Australia.
