To compete with other streaming services and sweeten the deal for its Prime subscribers, Amazon has its own streaming service.

Amazon's Prime Video is seemingly a free perk when you sign up for Prime, the retailer's take on a loyalty club. Free delivery for your Amazon packages is great, but it's always better when it includes access to a whole heap of streaming content at no extra cost.

With Prime Video you can stream thousands of films and TV shows, including some impressive original content you wont find anywhere else.

Prime Video is one part of Amazon Prime. In Australia, an Amazon Prime membership will set you back: $9.99 per month or $79 per year, if paid upfront.

New Amazon Prime customers can also take up a 30-day free trial. If you take up a month-to-month membership, it's on a no-contract basis – so you can cancel at any time. However, if you pay upfront for the year, you won't be able to leave early.

Compared to Stan and Netflix, Prime Video is pretty cheap, particularly when you consider that with your Prime Video membership, you can stream on up to three devices simultaneously and stream 4K content.

Netflix users need to be on its $22.99 per month Premium plan for Ultra HD quality and can add extra member slots for an extra $7.99 per month for those viewing outside of their household. Stan viewers can only get Ultra HD quality on its top-tier plan priced at $21 per month which will also give you access to four simultaneous screens.

Here's how a monthly Prime Video membership compares to other major streaming services on the Australian market:

What's on Amazon Prime Video in Australia?

Amazon Prime Video Australia - What's on

Prime Video's big drawcard in terms of content is Prime Video Originals. It's what separates the men from the boys, unless The Boys is what you're after - then you're in the right place!

Like Netflix Originals, these are TV shows that have been developed in-house or in association with Amazon MGM Studios. And there are some impressive titles in the Prime Original line-up. Shows like Daisy Jones and the Six, ReacherGood Omens, Carnival Row, American Gods, Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Fleabag have all got critics and fans talking. Most Prime Originals are also available to stream in 4K resolution, which is a nice bonus if you have the right screen.

It's also worth noting that now Prime Video has a lot of rental options. So when you log on to your Prime keep an eye out for the 'Available with Prime' symbol. If it's not there, then you may have to pay extra to rent or buy the content.

What are Prime Video Channels?

Amazon Prime Video logo

Prime Video Channels are an optional add-on for Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service. These channels mean you can bundle additional content from other streaming services into your Amazon Prime Video subscription.

While this feature isn't designed to save users money on top of Prime's subscription, it will mean you can access more content within a single app rather than having to switch between various accounts across several subscription services.

For example, subscribing to the Paramount Plus channel gives you access to Paramount's original content, such as Yellowjackets and Star Trek: Discovery within the Amazon Prime Video app. You can even catch football with an additional subscription to beIN Sports.

How do you watch Amazon Prime Video?

Prime Video Australia can be streamed on your computer through a web browser, or via dedicated apps on both Android and iOS smartphones and tablets. You can also get the Prime Video app on LG and Samsung smart TVs, as well as PlayStation and Xbox.

If you want to use a streaming device, the good news is you've got plenty of options now that Prime Video has come to Google Chromecast. You can also get Prime Video through Apple TV and Telstra TV, if you're an existing user.

One other streaming device you can use to get Prime Video on your TV is the Amazon TV Fire Stick or Fire TV Cube. These are devices much like the Apple TV or Chromecast. You connect either to your TV via an HDMI port and access apps like Prime Video (of course), Netflix, Spotify, Binge, and plenty of others.

Plus you can still get Prime Video onto your TV using the good old-fashioned method of a laptop and HDMI cable.

What are the best internet plans for Amazon Prime Video?

The amount of data you need for streaming isn't really a factor because most internet plans in Australia come with unlimited data. What does matter is the speed you have. Speed is a shared resource between all the devices in your household.

If you live in a home with two to four people we recommend at least an NBN 50 plan so a few people can either be streaming different things at once, browsing the internet or downloading something simultaneously.

Here are the cheapest NBN 50 plans in WhistleOut's database:

Does Amazon Prime Video have a free trial in Australia?

Yes, Amazon Prime Video currently offers a one-month free trial in Australia which includes access to all Prime perks.

Other streaming platforms that offer free trials in Australia include:

  • Binge offers a 7-day free trial for new users
  • Sports fans can score a 7-day free trial on Kayo
  • Apple TV Plus offers a 7-day free trial for new sign-ups
  • Paramount Plus offers a 7-day free trial for new users

Does Amazon Prime Video have ads?

Yes, at the end of last year, Amazon announced that starting in 2024 Prime Video would begin including limited advertisements in Australia.

At the same time, it plans to introduce a new ad-free tier as other streaming platforms have done. We'll update this guide when that happens. Reports say this is due to happen "mid-year" but Amazon itself has been tight-lipped. It did say however that it will "email Prime members several weeks before ads are introduced into Prime Video" and include information about signing up to the new tier.

What are the alternatives to Amazon Prime Video in Australia?

If Prime Video doesn't sound like your thing, you could try Netflix, Stan, Binge, Foxtel Now, or a range of other streaming options.

Netflix and Stan both have large libraries of quality movies and TV shows you can stream for around $10 a month, or $6.99 on Netflix if you can stomach the ads. Netflix is known for offering lots of high-quality original TV shows like Bridgerton, The Queens Gambit, Stranger Things and Wednesday, while Stan tends to have more Australian content. Stan's original content with big-name actors includes Natasha Lyonne in Poker Face, Isla Fisher and Josh Gad in Wolf Like Me and Zac Efron's Gold.

Binge is another excellent option. Starting from just $10 per month, the Foxtel-owned streaming service has the biggest collection of HBO to stream in Australia such as Euphoria, Succession, The Last of Us, House of the Dragon, and Game of Thrones, of course.

Sporting a robust content library, Binge has over 10,000 hours of TV and movies from partners such as HBO, BBC, FX, NBC Universal, ViacomCBS, Warner Bros, Discovery, Sony Pictures Television, Warner Media, Fremantle, Studio Canal, ITV, Paramount, and more. The only catch with Binge is it doesn't offer content in 4K streaming.

Apple TV Plus offers a whole host of titles for the whole family. Explore titles for kids, non-fiction films, comedies, dramas and original content like Ted Lasso, Tetris, Severance, and Platonic for $12.99 per month.

Beloved favourite, Disney Plus, is also a strong competitor for its impressive categories spanning Disney (obviously), Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and even Star content for those not into its animated and sci-fi offering. Score access to all of this for just $13.99 per month or $139.99 annually. Or you can subscribe to its Disney Plus and OnePass bundle for $14.99 per month for free delivery across eligible items from partners including Kmart, Bunnings Warehouse, Target, Catch.com and more.
