If you haven't heard, Max is the new kid on the block in the Australian streaming market.
We've compiled almost everything there is to know about Max so we can help you decide whether it's worth taking Max for a spin.
What is Max Australia?

Max is the new home of HBO in Australia.
Max is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), which owns HBO content, Discovery itself, the DC Universe, Harry Potter, TLC and more.
Max launched as "HBO Max" in the US market back in 2020 and started expanding overseas from 2021. When WarnerMedia and Discovery, Inc. merged in 2022 to become WBD Max was combined with Discovery's own Discovery Plus service.
Now Max has made its way down under.

Max price Australia
Max starts at $11.99 per month in Australia. Or, you can commit to a whole year upfront for a discounted price of $119.99 – that saves you around $24, the price of two months of Max Basic with Ads plan. This plan comes with the option for up to two simultaneous streams and up to 1080p HD stream quality.
Here's a look at Max's plans:
To kickstart its launch, Max is available at up to 33% off for both monthly and annual subscriptions.
The monthly discount price will be applied to the first 12 months. If you cancel your discounted plan before the 12 months is up you'll forfeit any remaining discount and need to pay full price next time you sign up.
Max's Premium plan subscription allows you up to 4K resolution stream quality with simultaneous streams on up to four devices at once. It will cost $17.99 per month (or $219.99 per year on an annual plan).
As an example, Netflix's top plan costs $25.99 per month for the same benefits. By comparison, Max is a cheaper option. Although it's still more expensive then Apple TV Plus, Prime Video or Disney Plus' Premium plan.

What can I watch on Max in Australia?
You can think of Max as a studio-specific streamer, much like Disney Plus, and expect to find plenty of WBD content.
Expect to see new seasons of House of the Dragon, The Last of Us, Dune: Prophecy, to air first and then live on the service. You'll also find iconic series like Friends, Rick and Morty, The Big Bang Theory, The Sopranos and blockbusters like The Batman, Barbie, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga at home on Max.
The heavily anticipated new Harry Potter series from HBO will also debut on Max.
How can I watch Max in Australia?
Max is an online streaming service, so you'll need an active internet connection and a compatible device.
Max will be available on phones, tablets, computers, TVs, streaming set-top boxes and gaming consoles, although we don't have a specific list just yet.
What are the best internet plans for Max?
When it comes to streaming Max, it's not a matter of data (most internet plans come with unlimited data these days) but one of capacity. Most internet plans have a maximum download speed, which is a shared resource between all the devices on your network.
We recommend signing up for at least an NBN 50 plan for
households of between two and three people.
On an NBN 50 plan, you have enough bandwidth for a few people in the household to stream different shows separately or use the internet for other tasks.

What are the alternatives to Max in Australia?
Max joins an array of streaming services already in the Australian market. You can choose between Netflix, Stan, Binge, Paramount Plus, Amazon Prime Video, BritBox, Hayu and Apple TV Plus. Plus, you have free-to-watch TV options from ABC (iView), Ten (Tenplay), Seven (7Plus), Nine (9Now), and SBS (On Demand).
With HBO originals galore, it's hard to pass on Max, which launched with a campaign declaring its content "All Killer. No Filler".
Netflix has its own popular original content like Stranger Things, Heartbreak High, Wednesday, Bridgerton, and more - but it costs slightly more than Max for the equivalent Standard or Premium plan.
Local streaming service Stan has a few hit shows under its belt including RuPaul's Drag Race, Killing Eve, Yellowstone, Breaking Bad, New Amsterdam and more.
Binge, with the loss of its HBO content, is less appealing as an alternative but is still the place to catch hit series Colin from Accounts, Saturday Night Live, Real Housewives Beverly Hills, Taskmaster, The Office (US) and The Walking Dead.
Amazon Prime Video is another option with blockbuster content starting at $9.99 per month. Some of its decent exclusives include The Boys, The Rings of Power, Invincible, Reacher and Wheel of Time.

Does Max have a free trial in Australia?
Max won't have a free trial offer at launch, but it does have big discounts available until April 30.

- Sports lovers can score a 7-day free trial on Kayo
- Apple TV Plus boasts a 7-day free trial for new sign-ups
- You can get a 30-day free trial of Amazon Prime, which includes Amazon Prime Video
What features does Max have?
Max has a variety of standard features to help subscribers enjoy their favourite HBO shows and WBD movies, some of them include:
- Up to 4K UHD and Dolby Atmos sound are available on compatible devices on the Premium plan. Get up to 1080p HD on other plans
- Ability to stream on up to four devices at the same time on Premium and up to two devices on other plans
- Download up to 100 shows or movies to watch on the go on a Premium plan. Up to 30 downloads to watch on the go with the Standard plan
Does Max have ads?
Yes, Max has ads if you subscribe to the Basic with Ads plan. Presuming Max follows the same pattern in Australia as it has in other markets, on this plan, you can expect ads before and during content at a rate of about six minutes of ads per hour of viewing.
If you want an ad-free experience, you'll need to sign up for the Standard or Premium plans.
Does Max allow password sharing?
Max, like other streamers, has made a point of cracking down on password sharing.
The Verge reported in November, 2024 that Max was going to begin with "soft messaging" around password sharing and eventually look at password sharing as a feature similar to how Netflix and Disney Plus allow you to add an "extra member".
