eSIM has been slowly making its way into new devices over the recent years. The "e" stands for electronic or embedded and unlike your traditional physical SIM card an eSIM is one that exists within the hardware of your handset.

There's a range of pros and cons to eSIM but if you're curious about if it's available on your device you're in luck. We've compiled a list of eSIM-compatible phones from major manufacturers.

How does eSIM work?

Rather than being a physical circuit chip that you can move from a phone an eSIM is built into the device. On most phones with eSIM installed, you can have at least two active numbers working on the same phone at once - one via the eSIM and one via the physical SIM. An eSIM makes it easier to switch mobile providers because you don't have to wait for your new SIM to arrive.

Dual SIM card slots have been around since 2000 and there have even been phones that could fit three or four SIM cards at once. But eSIM can take things further. The iPhone 16 for example has the capacity for eight or more eSIM profiles on one device. This can be handy for frequent travellers who can have travel eSIM set up or multiple countries.

Do all new phones have eSIM?

No, not all new phones come with eSIM. It's more common for eSIM to be included on premium and flagship handsets but not every new release to market. If eSIM is a feature you're particularly interested in it's worth double-checking it's included on the phone you want before you purchase it.

On the other hand, some phone manufacturers are deciding to lean hard into the technology. Apple shipped its range in the US without a physical SIM card slot since the iPhone 14.

How do I check if my Android device is eSIM compatible?

Checking whether your Android device is eSIM compatible is as easy as checking the settings. The steps may differ slightly across brands but not too much.

On a Samsung Galaxy for example you would navigate to Connections in the Settings app and tap SIM Manager. If you see "Add eSIM" as an option your device is eSIM compatible.

How do I check if my iPhone is eSIM compatible?

You can check whether your iPhone is eSIM compatible with the Settings app. Navigate through General to the About section. If you scroll down you'll see a section that says Physical SIM followed by another that says Available SIM or Digital SIM (on some iOS versions). In the Available/Digital SIM section you will see a 15-digit IMEI or IMEI2 number. If you have this section your iPhone supports eSIM.

Are all phones eSIM compatible?

No eSIM is a fairly new technology which means older phones typically aren't compatible. Outside of the premium handsets from larger manufacturers - it's not available on every new release phone either.
