Tiny telco Southern Phone today added Samsung's brand-spanking new Galaxy S8 smartphone to its range, available with monthly repayments on a standard two-year contract.
Available now, Southern Phone prices start from $60 per month for phone and plan, or a neat $10 cheaper than the next cheapest plan from Virgin Mobile. Unlike the major telcos, Southern Phone offers some 3G-only plan options, with cost savings on the plan at the sacrifice of download speeds.
For a phone as expensive as the Galaxy S8, some will be happy to find these cheap plans.
Unfortunately the plans are not exceptional value, despite the low monthly costs. Especially as the price creeps up, Southern Phone plans compare poorly with much lower data inclusions. If you consider plans costing $90 per month or more, a plan with one of the major telcos can include up to four-times as much data at the same price.
You’ll also forgo a number of value-adding plan features, too. Optus, Telstra and Virgin customers get data-free music streaming bundled in with most phone plans, while travellers love Vodafone’s $5 per day international roaming.
Southern Phone is one of the still-growing number of smaller phone service providers in Australia, and operates on the Optus 3G and 4G networks. But unlike a number of its tiny telco competitors, the Southern Phone plan range includes contract phone plans with a choice of Samsung smartphones to choose from.
