Point Break

Kate's comment: I’ll say it. Keanu’s best movie. Don’t fight me on this.
Kate's rating:
Let me take you back to 1991, to California, where the waves are big and the egos are even bigger. Rookie FBI agent Johhny Utah (Keanu Reeves) goes undercover and befriends a local group of surfers, who are suspected to be the infamous gang of criminals known as the ‘Ex-Presidents’. It’s here he meets their charismatic leader Bodhi (Patrick Swayze) and becomes enamoured by his philosophies and way of life.
And who can blame him? Swayze is a knockout in this film. It’s got guns, bank robberies, big waves and a whole lot of action. Also, there’s a cameo by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ Anthony Keidis! -Kate Reynolds
Director: Kathryn Bigelow | Cast: Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze, Lori Petty, Gary Busey | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Bank robbery action but with nice hair

Tracks

Kate's comment: Who knew camels made such good companions?
Kate's rating:
Tracks is based on the incredible true story of Robyn Davidson, who in 1977 set off from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean with her dog and four camels. Starring Mia Wasikowska as Robyn and Adam Driver as Rick Smolan, the photographer that National Geographic organised to capture her trip, Tracks is equal parts inspirational journey, breath-taking cinematography and heart-breaking reminder of the harsh realities of life on the land. It’s a slow burn, but journeys like this should be relished, not rushed.
Oh, and 70s Adam Driver is verrrrrry nice. -Kate Reynolds
Director: John Curran Cast: Mia Wasikowska , Adam Driver, Brendan Maclean, Emma Booth | Language: English | Rating: M

Baby Driver

Jacqui's gist: So much more than just an action movie, Baby Driver is a nearly two-hour long car chase / music video / action / comedy / piece of genius.
Jacqui's rating:
It's hard to know where to begin with Baby Driver. The whole thing is shot like a music video, complete with gun-shots, action and sometimes even dialogue that syncs with the music. It's full of fast-paced, car chasing heists and the action is really gosh darn cool. It's an Edgar Wright movie so it's got that stylised comic book feel and the dialogue is super slick. It's also really funny. The complete package, really, and a flawless piece of entertainment - Jacqui Dent
Director: Edgar Wright Cast: Ansel Elgort, Lily James, Kevin Spacey, Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx Language: English | Rating: MA15+

Eat Pray Love

Kate's comment: The best way to get your wanderlust fix while travel restrictions are in place
Kate's rating:
Liz’s life in the US is falling to pieces. Her marriage has broken down and she’s just so sick of eating salad every day. Cue the trip of a lifetime, where she will eat to her heart’s content in Italy, pray at a silent ashram in India, and fall in love in beautiful Bali. Based on the best-selling book by Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat Pray Love started a travel movement with loads of disenfranchised office-dwellers and city slickers craving their own EPL moment. Gilbert says she’s been blamed for ‘ruining Bali’, but it’s easy to see why people would flock there after seeing this movie. - Kate Reynolds
Director: Ryan Murphy | Cast: Julia Roberts, Javier Bardem, James Franco, Viola Davis, Hadi Subiyanto | Language: English | Rating: M

Knives Out

Alex's analysis: A gloriously fun take on the whodunit genre
Alex's rating:
After the apparent suicide of a wealthy 85 year old mystery novelist, private detective Benoit Blanc - played by Daniel Craig - is called in to investigate. Equal parts murder mystery and dysfunctional family drama, Knives Out is a laugh out loud hilarious take on a classic genre that both embraces and subverts its tropes. Just try not to enjoy this wild ride - Alex Choros
Director: Rian Johnson | Cast: Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tonic Collette | Language: English | Rating: M

Eagle vs. Shark

Anula's notions: A love story, wrapped in a revenge plot and garnished with oddity upon oddity.
Anula's rating:
It's not for everyone, but the blend of Napolean Dynamite-esque and Flight of the Concords styles make for a unique rom-com with flare. Taika Waititi absolutely nails his token style, of telling tragedy and comedy all at once. There are no emotion-filled monologues, or meet-cutes, or grand romantic gestures but there is revenge, windbreakers and animal costumes. Jarrod and Lily's story is problematic, actually they're both just problematic people but it looks like everyone has someone out there... I guess - Anula Wiwatowska
Director: Taika Waititi | Cast: Jermaine Clement, Loren Horsley, Craig Hall, Joel Tobeck | Language: English | Rating: M
Genre: Rom - incomprehensible

Interview with the Vampire

Anula's notions: A deeply disturbing introspective that will have you checking the shadows for weeks to come.
Anula's rating:
Based on the gothic horror novel of the same name, a journalist gets the interview of several life times when he sits down with 200 year old vampire, Louis (Brad Pitt). A life story like no other, the film follows the folly of eternal life and servitude across multiple centuries.
Anne Rice's novel is up there with classic gothic literature like Frankenstein. Be prepared for the macabre tribulations of good vs. evil and justice vs. revenge - Anula Keenan
Director: Neil Jordan | Cast: Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Antonio Banderas, Kirsten Dunst, Christian Slater | Language: English | Rating: MA15+

I, Tonya

Jacqui's gist: The Tonya Harding skating scandal is one of those stories that would be unbelievable if it weren't true.
Jacqui's rating:
In 1994 the American figure skater Tonya Harding's career ended in controversy when her ex-husband orchestrated an attack on her skating rival, Nancy Kerrigan. I, Tonya is the incredible true story of how that came to happen. Everything about this movie is surprising, from the humour to the heartbreak to the real details of the crime that shocked the world of sport. There was a lot of talk about this movie at Oscar time and it's easy to see why. I, Tonya is a movie that deserves all its hype - Jacqui Dent
Director: Craig Gillespie | Cast: Margot Robbie, Sebastian Stan, Allison Janney, Julianne Nicholson | Language: English | Rating: MA15+

Bad Education

Alex's analysis: A captivating lesson in white collar crime
Alex's rating:
Based on a true story, Bad Education follows America's largest public school embezzlement scandal. While stealing money from a public school is obviously a bad thing, it's hard not to be charmed by Hugh Jackman's portrayal of district superintendent, Dr. Frank Tassone, the film's multifaceted villain who clearly also wants what's best for the school and its students - Alex Choros
Director: Cory Finley | Cast: Hugh Jackman, Allison Janney, Geraldine Viswanathan, Alex Wolff, Rafael Casal | Language: English | Rating: M

Muriel's Wedding

Kate's comment: Australian filmmaking at its most superb
Kate's rating:
Muriel's Wedding is the unapologetic celebration of female friendship that we all need in our lives. It was fairly ground-breaking at the time; a movie where the woman doesn't 'get the man' and live happily ever after? But instead drives off into the sunset with her best gal pal? In Toni Collette's breakthrough role, Muriel goes through life not quite getting it right. She doesn't fit in with the cool girls, her dad is forever disappointed in her and her mum seems to be not quite present. All Muriel wants is to get married and escape her life! Quietly devastating but resoundingly optimistic, this movie is compulsory viewing for all Australians.
Director: P.J. Hogan | Cast: Toni Collette, Bill Hunter, Rachel Griffiths, Sophie Lee | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Comedy

Drive

Alex's analysis: Seriously slick hyper-violent arthouse action.
Alex's rating:
By day, Ryan Gosling - Drive's eponymous driver - is a Hollywood stuntman. By night, he's a for-hire getaway driver. While the nameless hero's criminal dealings follows a strict sense of professionalism - get in, get out, get paid - he gets thrust deep into the underworld when he falls for his next door neighbour. Driven by relationships as much as car chases, Drive is what you'd call arthouse action. And it happens to be impeccably stylish, channelling the nostalgic veneer of the 80s with its neon-flecked streets and a pounding synthwave soundtrack - Alex Choros
Director: Nicolas Winding Refn | Cast: Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Christina Hendricks | Language: English | Rating: MA15+

The Mummy

Jacqui's gist: Brendan Fraser alone should be enough to sell you on this movie. The action, laughs and horror capers are just an amazing added bonus.
Jacqui's rating:
If you haven't watched The Mummy yet, you've got to get onto that. It's got Brendan Fraser. It's got Rachel Weisz. It's got monsters, adventure, a villain who looks exactly like the main guy from Aqua, and more sharp lines than you can shake a stick at. Sure, it may be light on historical or even biological accuracy. But if you're the type of person who'd choose flesh-eating scarab beetles over 'reality', this movie is for you - Jacqui Dent
Director: Stephen Sommers | Cast: Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Oded Fehr | Language: English | Rating: M
Genre: Action adventure

Pitch Perfect

Anula's notions: It's acca-awesome.
Anula's rating:
You acca-believe it's worth spending 90 minutes of your life watching this movie. Check out every female stereotype, hilariously over exaggerated, and crammed together as an acapella singing sensation. Oh and Rebel Wilson is there. Get set on your couch for some horizontal running - Anula Wiwatowska
Director: Jason Moore | Cast: Skylar Astin, Adam DeVine, Ester Dean, Anna Kendrick | Language: English | Rating: PG

Watch TrailerMad Max: Fury Road

Joe's judgement: Easily the weirdest, most enthralling road trip of all time.
Joe's rating:
I'll admit it: I'm not a huge Mad Max fan, though I appreciate that the original movies introduce a grim, fascinating world. Fury Road takes all of these great ideas and uses them to springboard into a wild, original story which is far better than anything else in the series. What's incredible about Fury Road is how much of the movie is one giant car chase. If I have one complaint it's how unused Tom Hardy is in the role of Max. He does well in the role of the strong, silent type, but he's too good an actor to have him doing so little.
Director: George Miller | Cast: Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy, Nicholas Hoult, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Zoe Kravitz, Megan Gale | Language: English | Rating: MA15+

The Dark Knight
Alex's analysis: Not just a great comic book movie, a great movie full stop.
Alex's rating:
The Dark Knight feels like less of a superhero movie, and more of a neo-noir. Sure, there's still spectacular action set pieces, but the stakes are almost entirely personal. There's no improbable "the whole world is at stake" nonsense, grounding the film firmly in reality. Which is impressive, given that it's literally about a man in a bat costume and a psychopathic clown. The Dark Knight was arguably the first superhero movie for adults, and one - that in my opinion - has yet to be surpassed - Alex Choros
Director: Christoper Nolan | Cast: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal | Language: English | Rating: M
Genre: Supehero

Get Out

Jacqui's gist: It may be a horror movie exploring contemporary racism but don't get too serious, Get Out is unashamedly fun and weird.
Jacqui's rating:
When Chris travels to Upstate New York to meet his white girlfriend's parents, he notices something very strange about the African Americans of the neighbourhood. There's something a little Stepford-wife about - they're just too smiley. It's hella creepy and pretty soon he realises he has to ...get out. An Oscar-winner for best screenplay, Get Out is a really fun way to think about the insidious ways racism still exists in Western society - Jacqui Dent
Director: Jordan Peele Cast: Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Bradley Whitford Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Horror

Inglourious Basterds

Jacqui's gist: One of the most satisfying World War II movies ever made.
Jacqui's rating:
In
one of Quentin Tarantino's finest features, Brad Pitt leads a team of guerrilla
soldiers behind enemy lines during World War II. Their one mission: to kill
Nazis. Or more specifically, to terrify Nazis by brutally killing as many as
possible. The "Basterds" are good at what they do and eventually
graduate from persecuting Hitler's troops to coming after the man himself.
Revenge has never been so sweet - Jacqui Dent
Director: Quentin Tarantino, Eli Roth | Cast: Brad Pitt, Mélanie Laurent, Christopher Waltz, Eli Roth, Michael Fassbender, Diane Kruger | Language: English and German | Rating: MA15+

The Road to El Dorado

Jacqui's gist: This rapscallion adventure is an oldie but a goodie.
Jacqui's rating:
A delightful comedy about two Spanish con artists trying to hustle Aztecs out of their gold. The Road to El Dorado didn't smash the box-office on its release in 2000 but this movie has gathered a cult following thanks to its excellent wit, charm and the loveable thieves played by Kevin Kline and Sir Kenneth Branagh (if you please). It's even got an Elton John soundtrack. Watch for a tonne of swindling fun - Jacqui Dent
Director: Bibo Bergeron, Jeffret Katzenburg, Don Paul | Language: English | Rating: G

Scott Pilgrim vs the World

Alex's analysis: A quirky action rom-com with endless amounts of visual flair.
Alex's rating:
Scott
Pilgrim vs the World is your typical romance story: boy meets girl, boy falls
in love, boy has to defeat girl's seven evil exes. What could be more
relatable? Based on the comics by Bryan Lee O'Malley and directed by Edgar Wright of Shaun of the Dead fame, Scott Pilgrim vs the World is a laugh-out-loud-funny visual extravaganza packed with geeky references. But for all the pomp, Scott
Pilgrim handles a simple theme well: everyone has baggage - Alex Choros
Director: Edgar Wright | Cast: Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick | Language: English | Rating: M
Genre: Action rom-com
