felix mobile Plans Review: The Verdict

felix mobile is a unique provider offering unlimited data at a reasonable price, but with a significant speed cap. It represents good value if you want a phone plan you don't need to think about, but is a bit limited when it comes to extras and support.

What we love
  • Solid value
  • Unlimited
What could be improved
  • Few extras
  • Small number of support channels
The essentials

In this review, we'll look at value, support options, and the extras you by signing up to felix.

felix mobile plans: Value

Mobile plan value isn't black and white. There's no single best value provider. For example, a telco's cheapest plan could represent a bad buy, but the same provider could offer a much better deal at a higher price point. Our philosophy is that you shouldn't pay for more data than you use, and as such, judge value accordingly.

Based on extrapolated data from the ACCC, the average Australian uses about 30GB per month. We base our value score on how much a telco charges for its cheapest plan that meets that criteria, excluding discounts, promos, and extras.

felix is a little different to most providers, however. It has just a single plan. $35 per month gets you unlimited data, but you're restricted to download speeds of 20Mbps. That's similar to an NBN 25 connection. For comparison, most 4G mobile connections should be able to get download speeds of at least 50Mbps in metro areas. At the same time, 20Mbps is enough for most online activities, including streaming video and a bit of hotspotting. It won't be suitable for downloading or uploading large files, however.

When it comes to value, felix is more expensive than most prepaid providers offering at least 30GB, but comes in cheaper when compared to postpaid alternatives. While felix is technically a prepaid provider, its subscription operates on a month-long expiry rather than 28 days.

felix mobile coverage

felix's plan is powered by the Vodafone network, which currently reaches 96% of the population. felix only has access to Vodafone's 3G and 4G connectivity, however, and can't tap into the Vodafone 5G network.

If you want to check if a certain address has Vodafone coverage, you can use our coverage checker tool to do so.

All you need to do is punch in your address when searching for a new phone plan. After you've done so and hit Search, you can jump straight to the coverage map by tapping See Coverage Map and then tapping Click To Activate Interactive Map

This map will show you what kind of coverage you have in your area. 5G coverage is highlighted using the darkest shade of purple, 4G in the medium shade, and 3G in the lightest.

Coverage maps are only approximate, only show outdoor coverage, and may be impacted by local conditions such as buildings.

If you want to compare felix and Vodafone on more than just coverage, check out our felix vs Vodafone guide.

felix mobile plans: Support

When rating support, we consider how many channels a telco has to help its customers, rather than quality. After all, it's very tricky to access the quality of support in a meaningful way. For example, there've been times we've had both good and bad experiences with a telco's customer support. Instead, we focus on the number of avenues a telco has to help its customers to try and gauge its overall investment in support.

Here is how felix's support options compare to the competition:

felix Support Options Compared
Provider In-store Call Email Chat Social
felix - -
Telstra -
Optus -
Vodafone - -
amaysim -
Woolworths Mobile - - -
ALDI - - - -
Boost - -
TPG -
Circles.Life -

felix has a couple of options for getting in touch with its support team. For existing customers, it recommends using the live chat functionality within its app. Otherwise, customers can also do via its website. Alternatively, you can email felix at [email protected] or call felix at 1300 801 956 and leave and voicemail.

felix mobile plans: Extras

felix doesn't do too much in terms of extras, other than an international calls add-on. Here's how that compares to what other mobile providers offer:

felix Extras Compared
Provider Perks Program International Calls 5G Discount Bundles Other
felix - - - -
Telstra -
Optus -
Vodafone -
amaysim - - - -
Woolworths Mobile - - -
ALDI - - - -
Boost - - - -
TPG - - -
Circles.Life - - - - -

felix's plan doesn't include international calls out of the box, but for an extra $5 per month, you can add on international talk and text to over 40 destinations.

felix mobile has an international roaming pack that will set you back $20. This gets you 4GB of data, 100 texts, and 100 minutes of talk with a one-year expiry. If you're also using as much public WiFi as you can find while travelling, 4GB could even last your entire trip.

As with felix's local service, data speeds are capped to 20Mbps.

While not explicitly a customer extra, felix touts itself as a sustainable telco. The business is powered by 100% renewable electricity, achieved by investing in renewable energy projects across the country. Similarly, carbon emissions are neutralised by supporting certified Carbon Offset schemes both in Australia and internationally.

felix also says it plants one tree per subscriber, per month.

felix mobile plans: Devices

felix does not sell phones. All of its plans are SIM-only.
