Telstra customers no longer need ID for select mobile plans

Customers signing up to select Telstra mobile plans will no longer need to share personal ID documents, provided they bank with CBA, NAB, ANZ, or Westpac.

This is thanks to new technology called ConnectID that connects organisations that need to verify people's identity - such as Telstra - with existing trusted sources of information, like a bank.

The aforementioned banks now all support ConnectID. This means customers signing up for Telstra plans can use ConnectID through their bank to verify their identity instead of uploading a passport or driver's license. Name, phone number, email address, home address, and date of birth can all be verified using ConnectID.

At present, ConnectID can be used instead of personal ID for Telstra prepaid plans. It isn't currently supported on Telstra's Upfront plans, or plans from Telstra-owned providers Boost Mobile and Belong.

A Telstra spokesperson told WhistleOut there's no firm timeline for when the ConnectID tech will be expanded, saying the telco is currently focused on the initial rollout.

While not handing out ID can streamline the sign-up process, it also means Telstra isn't collecting and storing that information. This is notable in the wake of the 2022 Optus breach, where passports and driver's licenses were leaked online.
