Sibling telcos Tangerine and More are set to launch eSIM companion plans for smartwatches in early April, with pricing to be confirmed shortly.
"We are excited to announce that the companion eSIM is almost ready to go to market," a Tangerine spokesperson told WhistleOut. "We are anticipating this to be early April, with pricing information to be released prior."
The feature is currently in its final testing phase.
While pricing has yet to be confirmed, between $5 and $10 per month has been the standard price for a smartwatch eSIM plan from Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone.
So far, Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone have been the only mobile providers that sell eSIM companion plans.
eSIM companion plans for smartwatches allow users to share their mobile connectivity with an eSIM-enabled smartwatch. That smartwatch can then make phone calls, receive text messages, and access mobile data, independently of the phone it's paired with.
This, for example, lets a user go for a run with just their smartwatch while still having the benefit of mobile connectivity. Smartwatches from Apple, Samsung, and Google are all available in eSIM-enabled variants.
Naturally, an eSIM companion plan requires a customer to have a mobile plan with the telco in question. You can't have a mobile plan from one provider and an eSIM companion plan from another.
Here are Tangerine and More's SIM-only plans:
Tangerine and More's mobile plans start at lower price points than options rom the Big Three, so pending companion SIM pricing, should represent a more affordable way to get a smartwatch online.
Tangerine and More are both powered by the Telstra network.
Fellow Telstra MVNOs Everyday Mobile and numobile last year told WhistleOut they also plan to launch eSIM companion plans in 2025.
