Galaxy Z Fold 2

We liked the original Galaxy Fold a lot. While it wasn't exactly a device we'd recommend, we thought it was very polished for a first generation device and proved that foldables have merit as a concept. However, we had concerns about durability, as well as the small display on the front.

Thankfully, the Galaxy Fold 2, well technically, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 - named to match the Galaxy Z Flip - is set to seemingly address these issues.

Like its predecessor, the Fold 2 is ostensibly a phone that opens up to be a tablet, but this time around, both displays are bigger. This is most significant when it comes to the external display. Instead of rocking a diminutive 4.6-inch screen reminiscent of a feature phone on the front, the Fold 2 has a 6.2-inch display. Not only does it look a whole lot more modern, it should make the device a lot easier to use without needing to unfold.

On the inside, the display has been upped from 7.3-inches to 7.6-inches. The side notch (or "slotch") has been replaced with a camera cut-out on the right half of the screen. All in all, it's a much more polished aesthetic. The internal display will use the same kind of ultra-thin glass that protects the Galaxy Z Flip screen, rather than plastic like the original Fold.

In addition, the Fold 2 body is thinner than its predecessor, the gap between screen halves is smaller when the phone is closed. And as with the Z Flip, the the Fold 2 has a new hinge that allows the phone to open at any angle. Inside the hinge is a vacuum-like "sweeper" that will prevent dirt and dust from getting trapped and impacting the phone's durability.

At the stage, we don't know much too else about the Galaxy Z Fold 2 other than the fact it will be powered by a Snapdragon 865+ processor (complete with 5G), the inside screen will have a 120Hz refresh rate, it will have a 4,500mAh battery, and that you'll be available in a choice of Mystic Black and Mystic Bronze. Pricing is a big question mark, but we're hoping it may be a little more affordable than the $2,999 the original Galaxy Fold at launched locally.

Samsung intends to drop more deets on the Galaxy Z Fold 2 on September 1 (almost certainly September 2 in local time). Pre-orders will start on the same day internationally - hopefully in Australia too.
