HMD, the manufacturer of Nokia devices will be bringing its first 5G Nokia handset - the Nokia 8.3 5G - to Australia shortly, with pre-orders now running ahead of an October 15 release date. The phone will sell for $899 outright and anyone who pre-orders will nab themselves a bonus pair of Nokia Power Earbuds Lite that retail for $99.
5G connectivity is obviously the Nokia 8.3 5G's headline feature, but the device also has a whole lot of camera. On the back you'll find a 64MP primary lens, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, said to have improved lowlight video performance, a 2MP macro lens, and a 2MP depth lens. In addition, the camera app has an action cam mode that shoots 60 fps video with enhanced stabilisation.
Key specifications for the Nokia 8.3 5G include a 6.81-inch 1080p+ display, a Snapdragon 765G processor, 128GB of expandable storage, 8GB of RAM, and a 4,500mAh battery. As with all other Nokia smartphones, the Nokia 8.3 5G is part of the Android One program. This means it is guaranteed two years of major operating system updates, and three years of security updates.
You'll be able to grab the Nokia 8.3 5G from JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, and Amazon.
The $899 price point means the Nokia 8.3 5G will be going up against other semi-premium devices such as the OPPO Find X2 Neo, the LG Velvet, the Motorola Edge, and the recently announced Samsung Galaxy S20 FE. The Nokia 8.3 5G is priced inline with the LG Velvet, but doesn't have water-resistance. The Velvet doesn't have guaranteed software upgrades, however.
The Find X2 Neo and Galaxy S20 FE both start at $999, and both have selling points worth considering. The Find X2 Neo has 256GB of storage, doubling the Nokia 8.3 5G, and a pretty solid camera configuration. The Galaxy S20 FE has a 120Hz display, a faster processor, and water-resistance. A 5G model will set you back an extra $150, however, bringing the price to $1,149.
We're certainly curious to see how the Nokia 8.3 5G stacks up.
