Huawei today announced the FreeBuds Lipstick, a set of earbuds that come in a lipstick style case and are clearly angling for the female market. The bright red buds even come in a scented gift box, although Huawei doesn’t disclose what scent that might be. Probably something traditionally feminine, like roses or the wage gap.
Of course, there is nothing specifically gendered about the FreeBuds lipstick, apart from the marketing images that only showcase women using the products. Like all other tech, anyone can buy and use the FreeBuds.
On the tech side of things, the FreeBuds Lipstick seems to be a repackaged version of the now discontinued FreeBuds 3. The pair both share the same four hours of music playback, and up to 18 additional hours using the case charge.
Both sets of headphones use the same Kirin A1 processor, and boast noise cancellation with an open-fit form factor. In our WhistleOut testing, we found that this form wasn’t very efficient for noise cancellation, however. The buds are also advertised with adaptive ear-matching technology, which is said to optimise sound quality based on the shape of your ears.
Where the androgenous FreeBuds 3 retailed for $299 at release, the Lipstick boasts the traditional pink tax, retailing at $399 positioning the price point in line with AirPods Pro.
The FreeBuds Lipstick are available direct from Huawei both in-store and online.
