Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed the company will be announcing something next week in a post on Twitter. "Get ready to meet the newest member of the family," tweeted the CEO.
While Cook didn't provide any specifics, it's widely expected that the upcoming product will be a new iPhone SE. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has been reporting that the launch of a new cheaper iPhone is imminent since last week.
In Cook's post, he said the announcement will be made on February 19, but didn't provide a time. Precedent suggests this will end up being the very end of the day in Australian time zones, or early in the morning on February 20.
The new iPhone SE will mark the first time Apple has refreshed its low-end device since 2022. While past iPhone SE models have kept the "classic" iPhone design with a home button a comparatively tiny 4.7-inch display, the latest iteration is expected to look more in line with the iPhone 16.
Rumours point to the iPhone SE having a 6.1-inch display, Face ID (but no dynamic island), a single-rear camera, and an A18 chipset just like the iPhone 16 family.
The current iPhone SE starts at $719 for a 64GB model, but the new model is expected to be a little more expensive. Rumours have suggested a USD$479 price tag, which would translate to around $819 after factoring in GST.
The new iPhone SE isn't the only more affordable device on the horizon. Google is tipped to be bringing forward the launch of the Pixel 9a to March, and Samsung typically announces its A-series Galaxy devices in March or April.
