Buying a new flagship smartphone model ain’t cheap and, seemingly, the more familiar you are with a brand name, the higher the expected premium. Take Samsung, for example. It’s just launched the Samsung Galaxy S25 range and even the base model is (un)comfortably a four-digit purchase. Thankfully, you don’t have to wait for a discount to pay under the RRP.
If you’re rocking an older-model Samsung Galaxy phone (or any other eligible handset), you may be able to knock a little or a lot off the launch price. Optus, Vodafone and Telstra all offer trade-in credit for good-condition mobile phones. They even provide credit for damaged handsets in some instances. Alternatively, Samsung also offers its own trade-in deals if you want to buy directly. Let’s look at the essential info for trading in an older Samsung Galaxy smartphone for an S25, S25 Plus or S25 Ultra.

As is the trend, it’s not just Samsung Galaxy S-range mobile phones that are eligible for a trade-in deal. Optus, for instance, offers trade-in credit for popular Apple and Google models, too. Prices vary based on how new those mobile phones are and their condition.
Below is a breakdown of all available Optus Samsung Galaxy S25 plans with 36-month repayment terms.
Optus phone trade-ins start with an online quote after inputting your device’s 15-digit IMEI number. Look for IMEI info in your phone’s settings. If you’re happy with the quote, drop off the trade-in device to an Optus store or mail it in to Likewize via free return pack. Once the assessment is complete, you’ll be emailed a Mastercard gift card, which means you can put it towards more than just a new mobile phone if you’re so inclined.
It can take up to 30 days for device assessment to complete. The digital Mastercard credit is valid for 36 months from the date of issue. Note that the online quote may be adjusted after your device has been inspected. If that happens, you have 14 days to accept or reject the revised offer.

As with Optus, you can trade in a range of smartphones, smartwatches and/or tablets for Vodafone credit. In terms of mobile phones, Vodafone offers trade-in credit for Apple iPhone, Google Pixel, Oppo Find, as well as Samsung Galaxy, Fold, Note, and Flip handsets.
If you’re in the market for a Vodafone mobile plan paired with a Samsung Galaxy S25, check out the options below that have 36-month repayment terms.
If you’re a Vodafone customer, you’re allowed to trade in one mobile phone, tablet or smartwatch once every year for Vodafone credit, or you can “trade up” to a newer device twice a year. A device is traded in either at a Vodafone store or by mailing it to Asurion. With either option you’ll receive a quote via email based on the assessment of the device. From there, choose to use the credit for a new eligible plan or it’ll be automatically applied as recurring monthly bill credit.
If you cancel your Vodafone plan before using up your credit, you can receive a refund for it (but not for any remaining bonus credit). Note that for a device to be categorised as “good working order”, it must be free from physical damage (outside of normal wear and tear) and function normally, including the buttons, microphone and touchscreen.

Telstra follows the telco trend of offering trade-in credit for a range of mobile phones, tablets and smartwatches, including ones not listed in the tables above. You may be eligible for trade-in credit with a good-condition or damaged iPhone, Alcatel, Asus, Pixel, HTC, Huawei, Motorola, Nokia, Oppo, Sony or other non-Samsung Galaxy S mobile phones. Remember: the newer the model and the better the condition, the more likely you are to receive better trade-in value.
Use the different Samsung Galaxy S25 tabs below to find Telstra SIM-only mobile plans with 36-month repayment periods.
If you want to trade in with Telstra, you need to be a Telstra postpaid mobile customer. Once the trade-in is complete, the amount will be applied to the postpaid mobile account using your mobile number during the Telstra Trade-in online form. You can either use the Telstra Trade-in app or website to get an online assessment, both of which appraise the function and quality of the touchscreen, cameras, casing, battery and apps.
General wear and tear is okay in so far as it applies to “minor superficial scratches, dents and marks.” After a successful trade-in assessment, drop off the device within 21 days at a Telstra store or send it in via Australia Post. You’ll receive a text or email confirming your trade-in device has been received, and the credit should appear on your Telstra bill within one or two cycles.

If you trade in with Samsung, you can do it online or in-person at a Samsung store. Admittedly, there aren’t as many Samsung stores in Australia as there are options for the telcos above. Samsung estimates that it takes between seven and 10 minutes to complete the assessment, and you can trade in two eligible devices. If you’re sending in your device/s, you have seven days to return via Australia Post. Note that there may be bonus credit for certain devices; just check the Samsung Trade-in page to see if your device is eligible.

Should I trade in my old phone for a Galaxy S25?

Keep an eye out for our reviews of the Samsung Galaxy S25 line but, if the S24 range is any indication, the S25 should be worth considering if you like Galaxy mobile phones.
As for the viability of phone trade-ins, it is worth a look. While you can sell your older devices on places like eBay, Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace—possibly for more than the trade-in values listed above—there are potentially more logistical hurdles to tackle. In my experiences with Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace, you want to have patience for timewasters, no-shows and even scammers. You don’t have to worry about that with trade-in.
Besides, the longer you leave an older product gathering dust in a drawer, the more its value declines. That’s true of selling it personally or using it as part of a trade-in. Bottom line: if you want to update to a Galaxy S25 sooner rather than later, trading in your older smartphone—even if it’s damaged—is a viable alternative to a personal sale.
If you’ve decided to opt for a trade-in, apart from any online assessment process, take copious quantities of photos and videos of your device indicating working conditions and any defects, however small that may be in play.
This is especially important if you’re mailing in your device, because if it’s damaged in transit, or simply if the trade-in partner revises their quote based on damage that wasn’t there in the first place, you may have an argument on your hands – and it always pays to have plenty of visual detail and proof if so.
Samsung trade-in FAQs
Should I wipe my Samsung Galaxy phone before trading in?
Yes, and you should wipe any device before you get rid of it in any way. Before you wipe, though, ensure you back up any personal information.
Is it possible to trade in a broken Samsung Galaxy phone?
It may be possible to trade in a broken mobile phone. Scroll back up to the tables above for an idea of how much you may get for a damaged device. Trade-in assessment should be free, so all you stand to lose is time if you’re curious about how much you might get for your broken phone.
How is the condition of the phone assessed?
Assessment varies across Optus, Vodafone, Telstra and Samsung but, in general, you should expect more trade-in credit for a newer device that is fully functional. That means a screen free of cracks and scratches, fully operational cameras, and a battery that doesn’t run dry in a short amount of time. If your initial assessment is different after full analysis, the vendor will let you know.
Should I send back the box, cables and other accessories for a trade-in?
In most cases, the answer to the above is you should only send back the device and keep everything else. Pay attention to the trade-in instructions for anything else that should be sent in, which may include a stylus if your device came with one. If you’re not advised to send back the cables or a charger, it’s worth hanging onto those peripherals for extra charging or data-transfer options.
Can I trade in a phone I’m still paying off?
For a straight trade-in, you can’t use a device that you’re still paying off. If, however, you’re looking to trade up with a participating provider who you’re paying off your device with, you may be eligible. This may result in a lower-value trade-in, though.
