amaysim has built itself a reputation as a great value, reliable alternative to Australia's big telcos and takes out the award for Best Prepaid Provider, Large Plans.
amaysim takes home the award for Best Provider, International Calls again after winning the gong two year ago in 2018.

amaysim plans are a solid option if you're looking for a reliable, flexible alternative to Australia's big telcos. The company has built a reputation as a great value SIM-only provider known for offering competitive bring-your-own-phone plans, plus great customer service.
All amaysim mobile plans operate over the Optus network. Most give you access to 5G, but some of the cheapest ones are limited to Optus 4G.
amaysim offers SIM-only prepaid plans, meaning you'll need to bring your own device along with you. As for your amaysim recharge, the telco's most popular options have monthly (28-day) renweal, but amaysim also has long-expiry 365-day plans, a seven-day plan, and data-only plans.
Prepaid plans with this telco, like with many other smaller providers, are relatively no-frills. You'll get your data, talk, text, and not much else – which is all you really need to expect from your mobile service provider.
Whichever amaysim plan you go with, there are no lock-in contracts, so you're free to leave or change data inclusions at any time.
Here are amaysim's monthly mobile plans:
While amaysim is owned by Optus, and therefore in a bit of a different boat to other Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs), it still favours offering a low price over bonus features and inclusions. This is actually a good thing if all you want from your mobile plan is talk, text and data.
But that's not to say you're totally limited to those three features. Here are some additional details about amaysim's monthly (28-day) postpaid and prepaid plans:
Some amaysim plans include allowances for international talk and text to select destinations (28 or 42 countries, depending on the eligible plan).
amaysim plans don't include international roaming, but you can purchase an amaysim travel SIM. These plans let you keep your Australian phone number while you're overseas, and have a 365-day expiry.
Options range from $20 (100 minus of talk and 100 texts), up to $70 for 100 mins of calls, 60 SMS and 9GB of data.
The larger telcos have easier and cheaper options, but if you're not planning on travelling overseas regularly then you'll probably save money in the long run by going with a cheaper provider like amaysim and buying the occasional travel SIM when you need it.
amaysim supports eSIM, so you can go SIM card-less and enjoy the benefits (and disadvantages) eSIM has to offer.
If you choose a postpaid plan, amaysim will automatically charge you $10 and add 1GB to that month's allowance if you go over your data limit. Prepaid customers can manually add top-ups where required. These are also $10 per 1GB, but aren't automatically applied.
At the end of the 28-day period, your plan resets to its normal price and data allowance.
Whether you're prepaid or postpaid, unused data will get banked at the end of your current billing cycle or recharge period. You can bank an unlimited amount of data, but it will expire if you move to another provider or change amaysim plans.
Changing your mobile phone provider can seem like a daunting proposition. The good news is it's easy to change telco in Australia, and laws exist that protect your right to switch and ensure you always keep your phone number.
Your phone number is only held by your provider for as long as you allow. If you want to swap to amaysim, your old carrier will automatically relinquish your number and transfer it across when you activate your new service.
Here's the process:
Note that your old service will keep working until porting is completed. This typically takes somewhere between a couple of minutes and an hour or two, but there are cases where it can take a day or longer. At the very least, you shouldn't have a lengthy period without a functioning mobile plan. You'll typically know your new amaysim plan is live when your previous service stops working.
SIM cards store very little information these days, which means all of your contacts, phone numbers, emails and photos are either saved on your phone or in the cloud. Switching to amaysim will not delete any of your personal information from your device.
Still not sure? We've gone over the steps of switching providers in this video:
What happens if I want to cancel my amaysim plan?
As all of amaysim's plans are contract-free, you'll free to cancel or change plans every month. You won't be charged termination fees to leave, although you will forgo any remaining plan inclusions (such as data) if you cancel before its 28-day expiry.
