At least one retail NBN provider is now selling "Fast" and "Superfast" Fixed Wireless NBN plans, around two weeks after NBN Co started offering the speed tiers to resellers.
Leaptel is the first NBN provider we've seen offering the new Fixed Wireless speed tiers, promising speeds of up to 250Mbps on the "Fast" plan, and up to 400Mbps on the "Superfast" plan. Here are Leaptel's plans:
Speed Tier | Evening Speeds | Price | Deal |
---|---|---|---|
Plus (100Mbps) | 43Mbps | $79.95 per month | $69.95 per month for first year |
Fast (250Mbps) | 90Mbps | $89.95 per month | $79.95 per month for first year |
Superfast (400Mbps) | 120Mbps | $99.95 per month | $89.95 per month for first year |
These plans also provide the first indication about retail pricing and typical evening speeds on the plans. At a non-discounted price of $89.95 per month, Leaptel's 250Mbps Fixed Wireless plan is similar priced to a fixed-line NBN 100 plan. Similarly, the 400Mbps plan I is priced in line with fixed-line NBN 250 plans.
On the typical evening speed front, peak hour performance is unsurprisingly lower than speed maximums. Customers on the 250Mbps plan may only get 90Mbps during the busiest parts of the day. While that's a significant improvement over the 43Mbps Leaptel is advertising on its Fixed Wireless Plus, it demonstrates how much congestion can slow down the new speed tiers.
Every premise in the Fixed Wireless footprint can order a 100Mbps plan, but the faster options are a bit more limited. When upgrades are finished, the 250Mbps plan will be available to 90% of the Fixed Wireless footprint, and the 400Mbps option to 80%.
At present, around 300,000 premises are able to order a NBN plan on one of the new speed tiers. This will grow to 700,000 by the end of the year.
When a customer orders one of the new plans, they may need new equipment installed to support the speeds. If this is the case, the turnaround time should be around two weeks.
Aussie Broadband is set to start offering 250Mbps and 400Mbps Fixed Wireless plans in September, and Aus Internet has the speed tiers listed as "coming mid-2024" on its website.
WhistleOut reached out to several other providers to confirm timing, but didn’t hear back before publication.
