NBN Co has finished the infrastructure upgrades needed to allow select Sky Muster satellite customers to swap to Fixed Wireless NBN. These upgrades have expanded the Fixed Wireless footprint by around 50%, bringing in around 120,000 homes and businesses that could previously only connect to the NBN via satellite.
Upgrading to Fixed Wireless should be a no-brainer for most. Fixed Wireless NBN plans are not only faster than satellite NBN, but also have faster latency and are less prone to congestion.
While the upgrades are free, individual premises need to opt in to swap to Fixed Wireless. Australians can do this by checking their address on the NBN Co website, and then contacting their preferred NBN provider to order a Fixed Wireless NBN plan.
After ordering a plan, the provider will arrange for an NBN technician to visit the premises. They'll test to ensure the signal is strong enough, and then install the necessary equipment.
NBN Co says swapping from satellite to Fixed Wireless can take up to 19 business days. The time frame varies depending on location; up to nine for urban areas, 14 for major rural areas, and 19 for remote areas.
