Every year we judge the WhistleOut Awards, an initiative designed to find the best NBN providers and NBN plans on a national level. While you've probably heard of Dodo you may not have considered the provider for your NBN. That's an oversight, because Dodo has has been very competitive when it comes to selling cheap, high speed NBN plans.

Dodo was a clear winner of the Best Premium NBN Provider category - which is for anyone looking for an NBN 100 plan - thanks to its low-cost, no-frills options. This is the second time Dodo has won this category.

Not only are Dodo's plans on the more affordable side of the market, the provider reports congestion-free typical evening speeds on tiers as high as NBN 100. Dodo's NBN 250 plan still has very reasonable typical evening speeds of 245Mbps.

Dodo consistently runs honeymoon discounts on its NBN plans, where new customers pay a lower rate for their first six months. These offers vary from plan to plan, but currently, you can save as much as $20 per month on most Dodo NBN plans. Better this, this discount is valid for a whole year - not just six months.

Dodo NBN plans are contract-free. If you need a new modem, Dodo can sell you one for $99 when you sign up.

If you're in New South Wales or Victoria, you can save an extra $10 per month on your NBN plan by also getting your gas and electricity through Dodo. A $5 per month discount is available for Queenslanders who bundle their electricity.

How we pick the best NBN providers

We pick the best NBN providers through the annual WhistleOut Awards. We have reviewed the biggest cross-section of providers possible, including the top 10 service providers in each category and many smaller providers. The top ten service providers typically cover 80% or more of Australia’s phone and internet plans.

The WhistleOut Award categories for internet plans are judged by awarding 3, 2 and 1 points to the providers of the three best plans in each category every month, (July 2023 - June 2024). When judging plans, we consider 12-month costs, features and perks, typical evening speeds, and support channels.

In terms of support, we consider the breadth of support options available to customers, coupled with feedback from customer review aggregators. Due to the scope of telcos we track, we have not personally tested support services for each provider.

The award winners are the providers with the most points at the end of the 12-month period. In case of a tie, winners are chosen based on the number of 1st positions, then 2nd positions, then 3rd positions they achieved in that category over the year. A provider can receive points for multiple plans in a category if their plans best match the award criteria.

The exception to this is the sustainability award, which is judged based on telco submissions.

For the "best unlimited NBN provider" category we look at NBN 50 plans. For the "best premium NBN provider" category, we look at NBN 100. When considering the "best fixed wireless NBN provider" category, we judge it based on Fixed Wireless Plus plans.

The 2024 WhistleOut Awards, which were given to the NBN providers in this guide, were announced on August 1.
