Moving house is one of the more logistically challenging endeavours we go through and there’s a reason why so many of us hate the process. Even after packing all your boxes, hiring the truck, doing the moving, and unpacking there’s still more to be done.
While you can do the actual moving yourself you can’t just wander over to your internet service provider and swap your NBN connection yourself. Even if you could we wouldn’t recommend it.
So if you’re moving home and you want to take your internet connection with you, here’s how you do it with Telstra, Optus, TPG, Aussie Broadband, Exetel and Superloop.

Before you move house
When you’re picking your dream home you probably didn’t check what type of internet connection is available in the area. We get it. ‘Fibre to the Building’ isn’t up there next to ‘beautiful kitchen island’ on the new home checklist.
It is however worth checking to see what NBN technology type is available at your new address. If you’ve been living on a Fibre to the Node connection or ADSL then you may be able to get a faster connection. Unfortunately you might also get a nasty shock if you’re headed in the opposite direction.
Telstra Moving House Services
If you’re moving house and want to take your Telstra service along with you then you have a few options, but each of them will cost you something. Telstra moving house options come in three packages, Standard, Premium Professional and Platinum Total each which you can book online. Here’s what you get with each package.

Additional fees may apply
Moving costs can stack up and some of this can come from switching your utilities over. Regardless of which Telstra moving house package you choose you may still be liable for extra fees such as the NBN New Development Fee or subsequent technician visits.
Do I need a new contract at my new address?
Most Telstra NBN plans are no contract so you won’t need to sign a new contract when you change address. If you are still paying off your modem then these payments will simply transfer across with you.
While you’re organising the move this might be a good time to consider a new plan. If you’ve been on the same plan for a while, or you’re moving to a new technology type then you might be able to get a better deal or faster speeds.
How you use your internet connection will determine just how fast you need your internet to be, read more about choosing the right speed in our NBN speed guide.

How much down time can you expect?
If you’re sticking with Telstra and both your old and new residence are connected to the NBN then you shouldn’t experience any downtime in between. It will be as simple as taking your modem and home phone from one location to the other. In the instance that a technician is required to attend, it’s better to book your move date sooner rather than later so that they can visit on your preferred day to get you up and running.
On the other hand, if you’re moving to a new development or switching to or from the NBN then it may take longer to get you connected. To minimise your time offline it’s best to do your research and organise moving your utilities as soon as possible. Alternatively you can nab a wireless broadband connection to fill in the gap temporarily or if you’ve already got a modem with 4G backup then you should be able to just plug in and connect to the Telstra 4G network.
Optus Moving House Relocation
If you’re with the ‘Yes’ network then moving is as easy as sending a Relocation request through the online portal. After lodging your request you should hear about the next steps within 5 business days, and standard relocations shouldn’t cost you a cent.
Additional fees may apply
While standard Optus moving house services are free, complex or new service installs do come with fees. Professional NBN installs incur a $140 cost which is a one time fee if your new place hasn’t been connected to the network before. Some cable networks may also have additional fees but these are subject to your circumstance.
If you are switching between networks for example cable to NBN and you require a new modem, Optus will provide one for just $20.
Do I need a new contract at my new address?
No you won’t need to start a new contract with Optus at your new home. Any existing contracts will carry over and if these are not serviceable at your latest address then Optus will cancel your service and waive any fees.
While you’re organising the move this might be a good time to consider a new plan. If you’ve been with the same provider for a couple of years, or you’re switching to a different NBN technology type at your new address then you might be able to get a better deal or faster speeds.

How much down time can you expect?
Every situation is different, but if you’re relocating from the NBN to another ready-to-go NBN connection then you should be able to plug in your modem and home phone and be connected almost straight away.
You may experience more downtime if you’re switching between technology types or if you require a technician to visit your residence. The sooner you let Optus know about your move the less down time you are likely to encounter. To minimise your time offline it’s best to do your research and organise moving your utilities as soon as possible. Alternatively you can nab a wireless broadband connection to fill in the gap temporarily or if you’ve already got a modem with 4G backup then you should be able to just plug in and connect to the Optus 4G network.
TPG Moving House Team
Moving a TPG connection is a bit messier than other providers. A technician will always need to come out in order to manually switch you to a TPG line, so it's rare that you will be able to sort this out in a day or two. Costs and wait times vary depending on what kind of broadband connection you are moving to and whether you’re under contract or not.
Here’s what you can expect when moving house with TPG.
Connection type at new address | NBN Bundle | FTTB Bundle |
---|---|---|
Install wait time | Less than 10 business days | 10-20 business days |
Cost if under contract | $99.95 + $99 cancellation fee OR Sign up for an 18-month contract and pay $0 |
$0 and your contract continues |
Cost if out of contract | $99.95 OR Sign up for an 18 month contract and pay $0 |
$0 and move to a no lock-in contract |
You are able to lodge a TPG moving house request with the Moving Home Team online, or by calling 1300 865 124.
Additional fees may apply
The fees outlined above for TPG moving house services will only cover what TPG can provide. If you need someone from the NBN to come out to set up a connection or you’ve moved into a new development then you may need to pay additional costs to get your connection up and running.
Do I need a new contract at my new address?
It’s important to note that when you’re relocating your TPG connection you will only be able to keep your current plan if it is still available. If you’re on an older plan then you will need to recontract on to one of the provider’s current offerings. You'll be given the choice of an 18-month contract or a contract-free plan with setup fees.
If you need to jump on a new plan, or you’re not keen to sign up for another 18 months with TPG (or get slugged with moving fees) then this may be a good time to consider a new plan. If you’ve been on the same plan for a few years, or you’re moving to a new technology type then you might be able to get a better deal or faster speeds.

How much down time can you expect?
The more notice you can give the Moving Home Team the less downtime you’re likely to suffer through. Use the installation wait times in the table above as a guide for how much notice you should give to be able to get a technician to your new address and get you connected again.
TPG will continue charging you for your service at your previous address until your new one is installed, so if you want to avoid getting charged for a connection that you can’t use it’s best to get in touch as soon as you know your move date.
Moving with Aussie Broadband
Moving with Aussie Broadband is a straightforward process, you’ll just need to know your new address, the date you want your services to stop at your current address and the date you want the new location to be connected.
Simply call the Aussie team on 1300 880 905 and the team will let you know if your new address will be ready to connect or if you’ll need an installation appointment. Any downtime you experience in between will be prorated so you won’t be expected to pay for a service you’re not using.
Moving with Superloop
Moving home with Superloop is a straight forward adventure. According to the provider, making the switch when you’re on an NBN plan takes less than an hour in most cases. There are some properties that will require a technician to attend, and if this is the case Superloop advises it may take up to four weeks.
Switching houses with Superloop costs nothing, you’ll just need to get in contact to start the process.
Change address with Exetel
If you’re currently with Exetel and looking to take your plan with you at your new address, there is no straight forward way to do it. Althught Exetel has a pretty sleek user dashboard, this doesn’t include any options to switch addresses.
Your best point of call here is to contact Exetel directly on 13 39 38, and request a change of address for the service.
Moving with another telco
Most telcos have a similar process for relocating your internet and home phone services. You will need to call, or book your move online and then for the most part they can talk you through the rest.
While you may get lucky and skirt by without any fees most providers will charge a change over cost. These could get higher if you’re changing your connection type at the same time or moving to a brand new property.
If you’re out of contract and not particularly attached to your provider then moving home is a great time switch to a better deal. In some cases cancelling your current plan and signing up with a new ISP might be cheaper and faster than sticking it out with the one from your old place, especially if you can bring your modem across.
These are some of the best BYO modem NBN plans out there at the moment, with no set up costs.
FAQs
Do I take my NBN box when I move?
The short answer is no. The equipment that has been supplied by NBN Co. does not belong to you, but instead belongs to the premises. Anything that you have added to it, such as a modem or a router you should take with you when you move.
Do I take my NBN modem/router when I move?
Provided that it is a modem/router that you have purchased, be that outright or through a plan, you should take it with you. You buy it, it's yours.
How to I transfer my NBN to a new address?
The process for transferring your NBN to a new address is different depending on provider. You will either be able to lodge a moving request online, or over the phone with your current provider. Fees and connection times vary, so we recomend speaking to your provider directly.
What happens to my NBN plan when I move house?
Your NBN is not a mobile device, so if you move house it will stay where it is. You can however put in a request with your provider to bring your NBN plan across with you. Note that depending on where you are moving to, you may have different options. This could be a new connection type, which can bring with it greater download speeds.
